A customer recently asked whether their IMX-760S mold monitoring system could inspect white plastic parts for dust and missing material.
The same system was already working well with black plastic parts, but inspecting white products proved more challenging.

What Mold Monitoring Does Best

A mold monitoring system is primarily designed for presence and absence detection during the injection molding cycle.
Typical applications include:
  • Detecting parts remaining in the mold after ejection
  • Checking whether inserts are present before mold closing
  • Confirming part removal and ejector return
  • Preventing mold closing when an abnormal condition is detected

Can It Detect Missing Plastic?

Yes, under suitable conditions.
Larger missing-material defects may be detectable when they create a clear difference in shape or image area.
However, detection depends on defect size, contrast, lighting, camera resolution and working distance. Small defects on white or reflective products can be particularly challenging.
Dust, tiny surface defects and subtle cosmetic imperfections generally require a dedicated vision inspection solution.

Choose the Right Inspection System

Mold Monitoring: Presence detection, stuck-part detection and mold protection.
Vision Inspection: Small defects, contamination, surface quality and dimensional checks.
Not every inspection task requires a more complex system. The key is choosing the right technology for the actual inspection requirement.
